field-sizing: content (Chromium) with a JS fallback elsewhere. The settings instance is 88px empty, grows to 160px, then scrolls.
Animated placeholder
An aria-hidden overlay instead of the native placeholder (mirrored to aria-placeholder). visit picks one example per mount; cycle rotates while the field is empty and unfocused, with a 200ms reveal (instant with reduced motion).
